LAKES AS SENTINELS OF CHANGE

The idea that lakes integrate signals from the environment is hardly new. Massive fish kills in our nation’s most polluted waters prompted passage of the Clean Water Act forty years ago, and lake managers routinely scan monitoring results to determine where federal funds should be directed and to decide what remediation is called for. Today’s global climate change discussions are advancing our understanding of Lakes as Sentinels in new directions.

Recent studies by the University of Maine Climate Institute and the University of Maine at Farmington have looked at physical and biological indicators in our lakes to gain knowledge about our changing climate. How much earlier is ice out occurring in our lakes? What signals are lakes sending us about the effects of extremely variable weather, including more frequent and intense storms, longer periods of drought, hotter temperatures and less snowmelt? How will these changes affect the breeding success of our beloved Common Loon? Can LakeSmart help protect our lakes from unwanted change? Is your lake’s water quality monitoring program capturing all the information you might want to have?
